Where to apply essential oils on your body Nancy Sanderson, sister of Young Living founder, Gary Young, recently shared this YL blog post. It's great information for getting the most out of your oils:
Anytime you apply, rub, or massage essential oils into your skin, your experience starts with sensory receptors. These receptor cells are all over your body, and they do some pretty powerful stuff. Let’s talk about what these human body receptors are and why they’re so amazing!
What is a receptor, and how does it work?
Receptors are protein molecules that have binding sites on them for different types of molecules. When an external molecule finds a binding site it fits in, it communicates with your brain through electrical signals. These signals can go to your muscles, organs, or—in the case of your olfactory receptors—the amygdala, which is involved in the emotions you experience. Some familiar receptors are your taste buds. When you eat, the food or drink interacts with saliva, and molecules bind to the taste receptors in your mouth. These receptors come in contact with nerve cells, which communicate a particular flavor to your brain. Another example of receptors in action is Cool Azul™ Pain Relief Cream. When you apply it to your skin, it triggers receptors and sends cooling signals to the brain. That’s why you can feel the tingling sensation all over your skin! Learn more about how this over-the-counter cream works in our video “The Science Behind Young Living’s Cool Azul Pain Relief Cream.” Your body has these amazing receptors all over, so there are plenty of places you can apply essential oils. Check out our handy infographic below to see where you can get started!
I enjoy reading Young Living’s monthly newsletter, The Essential Edge, that comes with my monthly order. It includes all kinds of interesting information such as updates on their charity projects, new products, food recipes and more.
This month there was an article about DIY Bath Crayons! You can make these at home with a few simple products and no messy clean-up. What a good idea to get your kids looking forward to their bath! Click here for the instructions.
Speaking of kids, what are your favorite Young Living essential oils and products for back-to-school? Do you have an oil or oils that you faithfully use every day? Thieves and Purification are two that come to mind when I think of warding off germs. The KidScents oils (like GeneYus for focus and concentration and SleepyIze for that all-important restful night's sleep) aim to keep kids at the top of their game. Have you tried MightyVites or MightyPro for support from the inside out? Share your tips and tricks for back-to-school on my Facebook page!
Originally published by me in August 2012, I happened to run across this blog again this past week. It's a terrific tribute to Gary Young and a great way to start your day. Enjoy!
Dr. D. Gary Young's Great Day Protocol
I have seen Dr. Gary Young at several Young Living conventions, and I once took a Raindrop Technique class that he conducted. I have used his reference books and materials extensively for treating my clients and myself. You cannot help but admire this man when you feel his energy and excitement about essential oils. He has dedicated his life to researching and providing the purest essential oils available. That is why Young Living is the world leader, with farms and distribution centers all over the world. This month I would like to share his "Great Day Protocol." Start each day with Gary's simple routine—and then discover how happy and confident you feel!
Place one drop of Valor on the inside of your left wrist. Hold the inside of your right wrist to your left wrist for a few minutes. This step balances the body.
Apply a drop of Harmony to your solar plexus (the area just above your belly button) to calm your mind and promote positive feelings.
Apply one drop of Joy to the area above your heart. This step helps bring happiness to your mind and body.
Place a single drop of White Angelica in the palm of your hand and rub your hands together. Lightly brush both hands over your head, face, shoulders, chest, and down the rest of your body as though applying an angelic shield.
Welcome, gentlemen, this one’s just for you. Ladies, since you’re already here, you can check it out, too. Incorporating essential oils into your life isn’t just easy—it can also put a manly spring in your step. Pretty soon, you’ll be chopping down trees with your bare fists and wrestling bears to a draw, all thanks to these simple tips. Check out these three categories in your life that can benefit from a few drops of pure awesomeness: *Essential oils are indeed powerful, but please don’t try punching down trees and wrestling bears. Just use these essential oils as directed to enjoy their awesome scents and benefit from their therapeutic-grade purity.
Keeping in shape is one of the pillars upon which manliness is built. No matter if you’re crushing some bench presses, tearing up the fairway, or hiking high enough to high five an eagle, you’ll want to keep these basics in your gym bag to help you get the most from every workout: Treat those aches and pains Massage Cool Azul™ Pain Relief Cream into your skin after a workout for a cooling sensation that provides relief from minor muscle and joint aches, arthritis, strains, bruises, and sprains. Backed with our Seed to Seal®promise of purity, this pain cream will have your muscles thanking you for ditching the synthetic ingredients.
Take care before and after exercise Apply Deep Relief™ Roll-On to your neck and chest before working out to inspire you to push harder or apply it as part of a post-activity massage to target areas that need it most.
Personal Care Grooming sounds like such a primitive term, making it perfect for manly men like us. Separate yourself from the pack by looking great and smelling like nature itself with these essential oil-infused solutions: Smell good without perfume Supposedly, perfume is called “cologne” when it’s for men, but let’s skip the nomenclature and ditch it altogether. Start with Shutran™, Patchouli, Cedarwood, Bergamot, Northern Lights Black Spruce, or Black Pepper to see what works best with your body’s chemistry, then create a combination that’s all yours. Dilute with a smidge of carrier oil and apply a drop or two to your wrists and neck for a masculine scent that lasts all day. Keep that burly beard in check Give those lovely locks a healthy sheen with some homemade beard oil. Check out our handy beard oil blog post for some blends from the guys who know best—Young Living employees! Bottom line: If your beard is oil-free, it’s just not living up to its potential.
Treat your face to Shutran
If you truly must shave, make sure you’re at least doing it with the best stuff. Shutran™ Shave Cream is full of hydrating ingredients and pure essential oils that’ll give you a close shave with a great fragrance.
You like food. You like flavor. So why haven’t you been super-charging your healthy cooking with the intense flavor of essential oils? Check out these ways to get more essential oils into your diet: Spice up your life Perfect for boosting flavor in almost anything you’re cooking, essential oils are like a flavor bomb compared to dried herbs. Put some Zyng in your step
Add a splash of hydration to your routine by keeping NingXia Zyng™ handy. Or if you’re in a real rush, reach for NingXia Nitro® to keep your athletic performance and cognition at its peak. Both are delicious, convenient as heck, and infused with essential oils.
I was saddened to receive the email below a few days ago regarding Young Living founder, Gary Young. Although I never met Mr. Young in person, I considered him an exceptional man with a very deep spirituality. He gave so much to the world and will always be an inspiration to all of us. I would like to share this tribute with all of you from someone who knew him well.
To our valued Members, employees, partners, and friends,
It is with a heavy heart that I must tell you that my mentor and friend, our beloved founder Gary Young, passed away peacefully today (May 12) in Salt Lake City, Utah, surrounded by his closest family and friends due to complications resulting from a series of strokes.
Even though he wouldn’t want us to feel this way, everyone at Young Living is heartbroken by this loss. We take solace in remembering the special man who was such an iconic pioneer and messenger for essential oils and their benefits to people around the world.
Gary was the undisputed leader of the global essential oil movement. He spent 35 years studying the benefits and perfecting the extraction of essential oils, while building a billion-dollar plus global business designed to share what he deemed “the gift” of essential oils with millions of people.
His commitment to physical and emotional well-being, combined with his lifelong love of nature, drove him to learn everything about essential oils – from how they are produced to their wellness benefits. He was passionate about providing all of our members with only the highest quality oils, sourced from our own farms and Seed to Seal-certified suppliers and partners across the globe, so that millions can enjoy the full benefits of these amazing natural gifts today.
Those who knew Gary understood that no man ever had a bigger heart or was more devoted to the betterment of humanity. His love for others, empathy, and forgiving nature were always on display across his roles as a husband, father, farmer, researcher, leader, explorer, innovator, mentor, philanthropist, and more. Gary’s “maverick” spirit, unfailing work ethic, and passion for life inspired everyone around him to be better, bolder, and kinder. He not only pioneered and created the product category of high quality essential oils as a mainstream wellness solution, but he also raised the bar for quality standards and created a purpose-driven movement that continues to sweep the globe and change millions of lives for the better.
Mary, the executive team, and I have worked side-by-side with Gary and have had many discussions about his vision for the future of the company. We are completely committed to carrying on his legacy and mission of providing Young Living essential oils to every home in the world.
Mary will continue to serve as the CEO, and I will continue in my role of president and chief operating officer. In recent years, Gary and Mary have recruited and developed a world-class executive team. This talented group has diverse expertise across industries, from operations and manufacturing to research and marketing. This team has grown the business 800 percent over the last five years.
Our corporate staff is committed to “take action” as Gary always guided, and we invite you to join us in honoring his memory by striving every day to live by his philosophy:
“To truly accomplish our vision of taking the priceless benefits of our essential oils and oil-infused products to every home in the world, every possible effort is required. We seek ways to take positive, powerful action every day in every way. Ours is a proactive culture—never a reactive one.”
From a personal standpoint, I will miss Gary very much. He played an instrumental role in my life, helping me grow as a leader but more importantly as a man. Gary was from humble beginnings, and even as Young Living grew and experienced success, he never lost sight of his passion for helping others. Having the opportunity to work by his side for the last six years has taught me lessons about determination and the importance of relationships. I will honor our friendship by always asking myself, “What would Gary do?” to help me make important decisions. My family and I are indebted to Gary for bringing us into this amazing journey of sharing “the gift” of essential oils with millions of people.
Mary, Jacob, and Josef thank you for your kind thoughts and prayers. Mary will be sharing more information later this week.
Not many people have a “great day,” every day. This YL blog has good suggestions when you need a little help - and all of these are on my list of favorites! Do you use any of these? What are your go-to’s?
It’s been one of those days. Your presentation at work didn’t go as hoped, traffic was terrible, it’s raining, your to-do list is 10 pages long, and someone ate the last of the leftover takeout you were planning on for dinner. All you want to do is crawl into bed with a blanket over your head and call it a day. We all have days that feel overwhelming, hard, sad, or exhausting. Whether you’re feeling lost, overwhelmed, lonely, or homesick, the pure, gentle aroma of essential oils can help you reset, reflect, and spiritually rejuvenate. Here are a few of our favorite essential oils for when you’re down in the dumps.
Valor®: A hug for courage
It’s easy to identify the things we want to change about our lives, but it’s much harder to have the courage to actually take action. Fear of obstacles, embarrassment, and failure can leave us in a constant state of analysis paralysis. When you find yourself with a high-stakes day on the horizon, the aroma of Valor essential oil blend can help invite feelings of courage and strength.
Usage tip: Establish a daily practice of reciting self-affirmations in the mirror while inhaling this grounding blend to promote feelings of self-love and confidence.
Sacred Mountain™: A hug from Mother Nature
There’s nothing like spending time in nature to clear the mind and uplift the heart, but it’s not always easy to slip away from your busy day. This blend of Ylang Ylang and three different conifer essential oils evokes the sanctity of nature wherever you are—no hiking boots needed. Use it to promote feelings of strength, empowerment, grounding, and protection.
Usage tip: When you need a quick escape but can’t get away, rub 2–3 drops of this blend between your palms and inhale deeply.
Gathering™: A hug for connection
In such a fast-paced world, it can be easy to get lost in the chaos of everyday life and forget the important things. Essential oils are a great way to remind yourself of life’s little joys and reconnect back with nature and your true self. With Lavender, Northern Lights Black Spruce, and six other essential oils, Gathering essential oil blend is the perfect way to do just that.
Usage tip: Diffuse while spending quality time with friends or family to create scent memories that will transport you back to times of peace and joy during hard times.
Release™: A hug for liberation
As we go about our day, we pick up emotional baggage—a hurtful comment, a negative thought, a troubling news article—and after a while it can start to build up and weigh us down. It’s critical that we take time each day to unload and free ourselves. The balancing aroma of Release essential oil blend can help you let go of negativity and lighten your spirit.
Usage tip: During a difficult conversation with a family member or loved one, diffuse this blend to help you stay open-minded and positive.
Present Time™: A hug for gratitude
It’s easy to find yourself focusing so much on the regret of yesterday and the anticipation of tomorrow that you forget about the gift and beauty of today. Diffuse Present Time and practice mindful meditation to help yourself embrace and celebrate the present moment. Let its aroma remind you to slow down and notice life’s little joys—the mesmerizing beauty of raindrops streaming slowly down a windowpane, the sound of birds singing in the morning. There is beauty and wonder all around if you just take the time to look for it.
Usage tip: Diffuse this blend while tackling a mundane chore like laundry or dusting to help you stay mindful and grateful even during less-pleasant tasks.
Highest Potential™: A hug for confidence
The old adage is true: You can do anything you put your mind to. But in a world where we’re constantly being told that we don’t measure up—through marketing, social media, and even personal relationships—it’s important to remind yourself daily of just how capable you are. With Blue Cypress and 20 other essential oils, Highest Potential has an invigorating and inspiring aroma that can help your thoughts stay positive and focused on a bright future.
Usage tip: While studying or planning for the future, diffuse this oil to enjoy an aromatic reminder of the strength and tenacity inside of you.
Hope™: A hug for optimism
No matter how much we try to avoid it, everyone faces moments of hardship and heartbreak. During these difficult times, the most important thing is to never lose hope. No matter how thick the darkness gets, there is always a light ahead. Sometimes it’s faint, but it’s there. You just have to look for it. With this kind of understanding, you can overcome anything. Hope essential oil blend is here to gently support you on your journey, with comforting and calming essential oils such as Melissa, Juniper, and Myrrh.
Usage tip: Diffuse this blend during times of sadness to help restore your faith and find greater strength and stability.
When I was in college, I worked as the night orderly on the intensive care of a reputable and clean nursing home. I saw a number of older people in various stages of their last days or in a condition where they were no longer able to care for themselves. There are several residents that I have not and never will forget, even though this was over 40-years ago. Compared to most nursing homes in the area, the one I worked at had a lower than average death rate and lower than average of required hospitalizations. Some of the others in the area were dirtier, poorer staffed and required more patient to hospital transfer and more deaths, when compared to the number of residents. I often think it was because of the staff at the one I worked at cared for the residents and treated them with respect as if they were members of our own family, even they were so out of it that they had no idea who we were or where they were. I look back on it now and realize that cleanliness played a major factor in our good reputation. The floors and rooms were kept very clean and we were constantly reminded to wash our hands every time we left one resident to care for another. Gloves were only worn for the really messy cases, but as a rule, we didn’t wear gloves (this was before all of the safety issues we see today). Our parents tell us to wash our hands all the time and with the flu season upon us, we are reminded about keeping our hands washed everywhere we turn. But does hand washing really make that much of a difference when caring for others, like in a nursing home environment? Check this out: “Infection prevention practices centered on hand hygiene (HH) protocols can save lives across all healthcare facilities, not just hospital settings. This includes nursing homes, according to a new study published in the February issue of the American Journal of Infection Control (AJIC), the journal of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC).” “Researchers reviewed the impact of implementing a multicomponent HH program among nursing homes (NH). They found that incorporating consistent measures that prompt staff, residents, and visitors to wash hands can lower mortality and antibiotic prescription rates, and increase overall hand cleaner use. This study is among the first to assess HH practices outside of the hospital setting through a randomized controlled trial.” The researches listed their results:
The intervention group that incorporated HH measures reported lower mortality (2.10 in the intervention group vs. 2.65 in the control group, per 100 residents per month) and antibiotic prescription rates (5.0 vs. 5.8 daily doses per 100 resident days). Notably, researchers recorded a 30 percent lower mortality rate in the intervention group in January-March 2015,
To note, while the study resulted in a lower mortality rate among the intervention NHs, the study leads flagged that the impact was not sustained after the HH intervention ended (2.53 deaths per 100 residents in the last three months of the study, as compared to 2.87 deaths per 100 residents in the three months after the study concluded).
Additionally, they reported that the number of antibiotic prescriptions in the intervention group were lower than the control group indicating that regular hand washing helped prevent the spread of illnesses and infections. If you have any loved ones in a nursing home, share this with them and insist that follow strict hand washing protocols. It can and will make a difference in how long your loved one OR YOU, will live.

The Danish concept of hygge has taken the world by storm. Danes are consistently ranked as some of the happiest people on Earth*, and with the longstanding cultural practice of hygge, it’s not surprising! Before getting too far in our quest for cozy, comfortable happiness, let’s learn how to say it, so sharing this concept with friends and family is easy! *World Happiness Report 2017
How to pronounce hygge
Hygge is pronounced hoo-gah, but don’t make those vowels too long, pals! The vowel sounds in a lot of languages don’t have an exact match—much like there isn’t an exact word in many languages for hygge. Don’t get too hung up on the pronunciation—that wouldn’t be hygge at all!
While you can feel hygge anywhere, from on your bike to in the library, it’s easiest to experience it in your home. A few subtle tweaks will have you feeling hygge in no time. You can make similar adjustments to your office or other personal spaces to bring hygge into all areas of your life.
There’s no need to redecorate your home to have it fit a certain aesthetic. Hygge is about feeling safe, cozy, and comfortable. It may mean adding a few extra pillows and blankets to a basket or lighting a fire in the fireplace more frequently; but don’t redesign for a look that doesn’t feel like you. Another element that is very important to hygge is the incorporation of nature into the home to remind people of the beauty and wonder of the natural world. For some, this may mean sheepskin rugs, wooden furniture, and pine boughs. Your interpretation may include fresh floral bouquets or even welcoming a furry family member into your home. To bring the aroma of nature into your home, try diffusing favorite floral or evergreen essential oils such as Lavender, Geranium, or Pine.
One component of hygge that is surprisingly overlooked in many households is lighting. During the daytime, keep curtains and blinds open to let in as much natural light as possible. In the evening, swap out overhead lights for lamps. In Denmark, people go wild for candles to light the dark nights. If that’s not your thing, the Desert Mist™ Diffuser offers a beautiful, warm, flickering light, reminiscent of a candle, with the added bonus of up to 10 hours of diffusing your favorite essential oils on its intermittent mode.
As we’ve noted, hygge is about comfort and happiness. For many, the right soundtrack can be key in creating that feeling. If you have a record player, try digging through some old vinyl for a bit of nostalgia—and to show people how truly hip you are—and spend a weekend spinning vintage tunes. You could also collaborate with friends to make an epic playlist of favorite songs. If you want to cozy up on the sofa and listen to a completely comfortable selection compiled by Young Living members from all over, try our sweater-weather playlist.
The feeling of sipping a warm cup of herbal tea or hot cocoa while nestled in a big blanket reading your favorite book: that’s hygge at its best. Try adding a drop of Vitality™ oil to your herbal tea or try this Lavender hot chocolate recipe to elevate your hygge experience.
You’re not alone!
Integral to hygge is connecting with family and friends. When we invite guests into our homes, we often bear the burden of cleaning, cooking, and entertaining. Hygge recognizes that the feeling of happiness comes from being together, not over fussing. Ask friends to bring leftovers, pull out whatever happens to be in the fridge, and enjoy time with one another; loads of laundry can wait! Try diffusing blends like Joy™ or Gathering™ to help add to the intimate setting.
The only thing you need to know about dressing for a hygge lifestyle is feeling comfortable. That doesn’t necessarily mean your rattiest pajama pants and the slippers you maybe should have thrown out a few years ago. You should also feel happy and confident in your appearance—ready to take hygge out into the world.
Stay warm and content in cuddly sweaters, woolen socks, and pants whose waistband never digs. To add to your peaceful, easy feeling, place a few drops of Lavender essential oil on a washcloth or dryer ball the next time you do your laundry.
Friends and family
As we noted above, being with loved ones can be one of the greatest elements of hygge. Whether they join you for weekend brunch, an evening walk, or a picnic, time with your favorite people is the best way to make you feel hygge. Don’t forget your furry friends in your time creating connections. Being with them helps build oxytocin—the love hormone—which is perfect for hygge!
We want to reiterate: Hygge isn’t about being lazy, but it is about placing effort and energy into the most important things. To wit, cleaning out the office is less important than fostering relationships with dear friends. Extravagance is unnecessary for inviting friends or neighbors over for playing games or watching movies. Remember to share responsibility with your guests: Maybe whip up something easy, like our Thai mango soup, and get to enjoying each other’s time!
Keeping your gatherings small can add to your experience of hygge. Being able to connect over conversation with a few choice friends helps you shake of the stresses of everyday life. Help everyone feel relaxed and calm by filling the room with the sweet, serene aroma of Stress Away™ in your diffuser. There’s no doubt that we’re huge fans of hygge! For other tips that can help you cultivate the comfortable, happy feelings of hygge, try reading up on essential oils for happy people, as well as ways to cozy up with Clove.
